What's greener than a Prius? The Algaeus, a Prius with algae fuel in the tank

Remember Sapphire Energy, the company that uses algae to generate renewable gasoline? They's partnered up with "Fuel" director Josh Tickell for a 10-day, cross-country tour from San Francisco to New York City using a Prius that will burn some algae-based renewable gasoline along the way. If nothing else, this trip gives up a new entry for the list of frightening eco-words: Algaeus.

The Algaeus, pictured, does more than burn biofuel. It is a plug-in vehicle that has an additional battery pack and "an advanced energy management system." The press release announcing the trip (available after the jump) doesn't specify how the Algaeus will refuel with the biofuel as it drives across the continent, just that Sapphire Energy will providing the fuel. Chrysler fired its biggest salvo yet in the CUV wars by officially unveiling the Dodge Journey in front of a throng of mildly interested in journalists. Truly, if you've seen one CUV, you've seen them all, and the Dodge Journey is all kinds of derivative. Coming from the automaker that brought us the Viper, Charger, Magnum and Challenger Concept in recent years, the Journey's design comes off as eminently safe. Perhaps Dodge is playing to the middle with this one, hoping to boost sales by appealing to the masses. What will sell the Journey are some of its clever interior storage solutions, including two bins in the floor directly behind the front seats, and more storage underneath the front passenger seat cushion. While the Journey could seat seven in a pinch thanks to its optional third row, it's obvious after having seen it in person that those venturing aft must be small and limber. What won't help the Journey is its powertrain lineup, which includes a 2.4L World Engine four-cylinder with unimpressive fuel economy, a 2.7L flex-fuel V6, and a 3.5L V6 that produces a meager 235 HP. The latter mill is mated to a six-speed automatic, but is still noticeably underpowered compared to other 3.5L V6 engines offered by its competitors while not delivering an appreciable gain in fuel economy to make up for it.

Big derrieres can be hot if they're attached to the right body. We're talking about cars here, specifically wagons whose ample rumps allow you to haul more cargo while hardly carrying the stigma of a libido killing minivan. Wagons are still very popular in Europe, so Cadillac had the bright idea of building a wagon version of its BLS, a front-wheel drive entry level luxury car that's a Saab 9-3 beneath its skin. Don't call this a Sport Combi though, as the BLS gets it own sheetmetal, and the wagon unveiled in Frankfurt wore it well. It looks very much like a first-gen CTS that's been starving itself.Cadillac is hoping that by offering European customers more choices, it will sell more cars, so in addition to the Wagon it's also offering Stabilitrak as standard equipment and two new engines for the BLS in Europe next year. The first is a 1.9L two-stage turbodiesel producing 180 HP and 295 ft-lbs., and the second is a 2.0L Flexpower engine that produces 285 HP and is able to run on E85 ethanol. Since the BLS is largely sourced from Saab, it should come as no surprise that the Flexpower engine is really one of the Swedish automaker's Biopower engines.

It's finally here, arrived in secrecy just like the airplane from which it takes its cues: the 2008 Lamborghini Reventón. It lurked between three women dressed in beige overalls and work boots. The beige tarp that covered it fell in a mess of sharp points and acute angles, as if someone had stuck a chunk of quartz underneath it. Before Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, came out and spoke, there was a video presentation shown on the screen behind the car. It was probably the same video shown to the lucky few given advance notice of the car, a waterfall of quick cuts that gave tasty glimpses of the car at the center of the hubbub.
Thankfully, the first thing Stephan did before speaking was unveil the car. He spoke of the success of Lamborghini, how 2007 would be another record year, and that this car was a tribute to the continuing success of the raging bull. He let us know that it's a 6.5-liter V12 with 650 horsepower, that it has 4-wheel drive, that it is named after the bull that killed Felix Guzman in 1943, and that it costs one million euros before taxes. Then he introduced the team that was responsible for the car. And then he said goodbye. That was it. No mention of the dashboard. No mention of why they're only making 20 of them. No mention of... why? Sure, Lamborghini's doing well, and to celebrate you make 20 -- twenty?! -- of a car that is the most terrific piece of sculpture to breath God's oxygen in years.

The Lamborghini Reventon was back on display at the Lambo booth today, and everyone wanted a piece of it. Ten-year-olds with cameras elbowed their way through the throng, and grown men took pictures of each other posing in the driver seat. In short, dignity of any sort died as soon as the sheet came off the Reventon. But we could hardly hold that against them. With a production run of 20 already presold, it's not like they'll ever be able to test-drive one at a Lambo dealership.
Named for a bull that killed his human adversary, Feliz Guzman, in 1943, the Reventon is a rebodied, slightly more powerful version of the Murcielago LP640. The mid-mounted 6.5-liter V12 has been uprated for 650 horsepower -- an increase of 10. Max torque is still 487 pound-feet. And Lamborghini's e-gear sequential manual transmission transfers it to all four wheels, which are quite striking, by the way. However, thanks to its lighter carbon-fiber body panels and improved aerodynamics, the Reventon is quicker than the standard LP640. Sixty mph is an insignificant milestone for this car; it's come and gone after 3.4 seconds (vs. 3.8 previously). Top speed is 211 mph.
In case you weren't aware the Reventon's exterior was inspired by the avionics industry, the point comes across immediately when you see its cabin instrumentation. The displays are completely customizable, says Lamborghini, and a g-force meter is being offered for the first time. All 20 Reventons will be built and delivered to customers during the 2008 calendar year. Yet... there's this cryptic line in the press kit: "The Lamborghini Reventon is not destined to remain a one-off." We take this to mean the Reventon is an intermediary step between the Murcielago and its successor.

Five Dallas teens were injured in an accident between (gulp) a Lamborghini Murcielago and a Ferrari Enzo, allegedly while street racing. According to the unconfirmed report, the Lamborghini was driven by the daughter of local man who owns an an exotic-car dealership. The Enzo was allegedly driven by the daughter of a local attorney. Three male passengers were reportedly also injured, one possibly critically. We had a "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" joke all ready, but it wasn't that funny.

The Lamborghini is valued at $280,000, and the Ferarri is valued at more then $2,000,000.00.

Lamborghini Reventon vs Tornado Jet

The Ghedi military airport in Brescia, Italy was chosen by Lamborghini to stage a mind blowing acceleration race between a Tornado jet aircraft (A200-A) provided by the airbase, and the Reventón, Lambo’s ultra limited supercar who’s design was inspired by the very latest aeronautics. The event was made to present the Lamborghini super car to international TV networks.

The fighter pilot and the Lamborghini test driver challenged each other on a 3km-long (approx 1.9 miles) runway. Although the 650 Hp strong Reventon managed to take the lead in the first leg of the race, the Tornado caught up in the last few feet, taking off and flying over Lamborghini’s $1.5 million supercar that was going at a speed of over 340 km/h -212 mph.

Spy Shots: BMW V5 spied naked

Hot on the heels of the BMW X6 introduction at the Frankfurt Motor Show last week comes word of a yet another variation from Munich. The V5 is not a new engine configuration, it's a new body style for BMW. Looking like a pretty standard five door hatchback, the rear roofline is higher than the more coupe-like X6, allowing for more headroom.

The V5 is thought to be built on the same platform as both the X5 and X6, which means that it will probably by built alongside the X models in South Carolina. CAR is reporting that the new machine is targeted at the US market, which would be an odd choice by BMW.
